The European Association of Non-integrated Metal Importers and Distributors (EURANIMI) is calling for an extension of the European Commission’s proposed overhaul of EU steel trade defenses to downstream finished products, as well as an overall revision of the extent of the proposals, writes Opis McCloskey.
In a press release and associated briefing note 27 October, EURANIMI draws further attention to threats echoing across the downstream steel and manufacturing space (https://mccloskey.opisnet.com/content/article/eu-downstream-steel-sector-warns-existential-threats) : that potential inflationary effects from the Commission’s proposed steel defense regime cannot be sustained by domestic manufacturers. “It is not too late — the Commission’s plan can still be revised and improved by the European Parliament and the Council,” said Christophe Lagrange, Executive Board Member of EURANIMI.
“Today, the Commission seems to want to make a “Trump move” — turning everything upside down from one day to the next — while the DNA of the European Union has always been to act with balance, caution and a sense of proportion, with an eye on the entire industrial picture. Europe needs to fundamentally rethink its protection strategy and consider the entire steel value chain, not just the interests of steel mills. Otherwise, we will soon be producing steel for a manufacturing industry that is a shadow of its former self.”
